solemn concert on the occasion of re-opening of the Municipal House
live on 2nd May 1997, Smetana Hall, Prague
The Municipal House along with its Smetana Hall, the largest concert hall in Prague and the seat of the Prague Symphony Orchestra, was extensively reconstructed between 1994-97. The Municipal House has played an important role in Czech cultural and social life since it was built in 1911. Its value is enhanced by its exquisite Art Nouveau architecture.
The organ was played by Jaroslav Tůma, the best Czech organist, teacher and composer, connoisseur of historic organs.
The Prague Symphony Orchestra was established in 1934 as a relatively small orchestra focused primarily on recording film music. Since then it has grown considerably in size and importance as well. Today it is one of the most prominent Czech orchestras, travelling worldwide, recording extensively and co-operating with the best conductors and soloists. The acclaimed Italian conductor Gaetano Delogu was Prague SO’s chief conductor from 1995 to 1998, having co-operated with it since 1969 already.
The famous and very beautiful Cello Concerto by Dvořák was brilliantly performed by Jiří Bárta. He entered the professional music world at the turn of the 80s and 90s and has established himself as one of the most sought-after cellists with wide international acclaim.
The solo parts in the impressive Te Deum, which Dvořák composed in 1892 during his stay in New York for the celebrations of the 400th anniversary of Columbus’s discovery of America, were taken by Zdena Kloubová and Ivan Kusnjer, soloists of the National Theatre Opera and internationally acclaimed opera and concert performers.
