Opening Concert of Prague Spring 1999
Czech Philharmonic Orchestra
conductor
Sir Charles Mackerras
live on 12th May 1999, Smetana Hall, Prague
The opening concert of Prague Spring 1999 was traditionally opened by Smetana’s cycle of symphonic poems My Country. It was undoubtedly a great experience. Sir Charles Mackerras, a specialist in Czech music, led the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra elaborately as well as sensitively. He found many subtle nuances, which normally do not show. The conductor’s approach was aware of the historical background, at the same time it was not only intellectual but also genuinely melodramatic. Sir Charles Mackerras, who has co-operated with the Czech PO for a long time, says it is the best orchestra to perform this very national piece, whose beautiful music, however, has been loved by listeners all over the world.
