A Jewel of the Baroque

The Český Krumlov castle and chateau feature on UNESCO’s list of the world’s cultural and natural heritage sites. Forming a part of the chateau area is a unique Baroque theatre – unique, since it is only here that the original Baroque stage and its machinery, still operated in the old manual way, can be found. The stage sets are the oldest that have come down to us from the whole Baroque and Rococo era production anywhere in the world.

The document “A JEWEL OF THE BAROQUE” tells the story of the reconstruction of the theatre, however also the story of the man, who thanks to unrelenting enthusiasm and indefatigable will uprised from dust a historical memory, which is today being admired by art historians from all over the world, who travel to Český Krumlov.

And since theatre, in the true sense of the word, comes to life only through performances for the public, we shall also follow the process of preparing for performance the opera “DOVE È AMORE È GELOSIA”, which was written on commission of Prince Josef Adam of Schwarzenberg for the Baroque theatre at Český Krumlov, and which could be heard again at the same place after a gap of 243 years.
