The Municipal House
The Spirit of art Nouveau

The Municipal House has played an important role in Czech cultural and social life since it was built in 1911 in the very centre of Prague. Its value is enhanced by its exquisite architecture - it is an outstanding example of the Art Nouveau style. The most prominent Czech artists of that time, such as Max Švabinský, Alfons Mucha, J. Preisler, F. Ženíšek and V. Myslbek, took part in decorating the interior. On 28th October 1918 the independence of the Czechoslovak Republic was proclaimed there. The most important part of the House is the Smetana Hall, where many concerts and important cultural events have taken place.

This film enthrals us with the flow of details as well as full shots of the magnificent interior and exterior of the House. The play of colours, light and shapes makes us feel the "Spirit of Art Nouveau". The programme is accompanied by Largo from Dvořák’s New World Symphony.
